About Robert
Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, in 1960, Rob Crosby graduated in Fine Arts from Niagara College and has been painting for over 34 years. Now living on Ontario, his heart still belongs to the east coast. This is very evident in his subject matter.

Painting in acrylics for the last 25 years Rob finds it a more versatile medium. He has also developed a passion for photography that allows him to paint from his own photos. His favorite subjects are landscapes, fishing villages and his two beautiful children.

Where do you feel art is going?
I hope one day to retire early and paint for a living, but at the moment I like to eat...lol. I am going to start a small series of paintings from my trips to China soon, but will probably revert back to the east coast painting again.

What is the role of the artist in society?
I do not like to think that my art as more than to make people remember a good memory, or to appreciate what is in the world. But I have a great deal of respect for artists that are trying to make a point about life and society. I do not think that I am trying to make any influence in society.

What is the place of your work in society?
My reason for my art is very simple ...I like to paint and do photography.

What technique do you use?
My technique for painting has evolved over the last twenty years and changes continually. I do not know what you would call it, but I have been told that I am a detailist.

Where do you do your work?
I work at Fairview Photo Lab where I am involved with photography and sales. I also do the designs for many of the media and signs that we use. I get involved with the framing to some extent, but mostly for my own use.

Do you work from life, or from photographs or from imagination?
This job goes along very well with my art. Most of my painting is from photos that I have taken. It takes me along time to do a painting so I need a photo to work with.

What moves you most in life, either to inspire or upset you?
I do not know what moves me all that much, but it bothers me that people are moving so fast that they do not see all of the beauty that is around all the time. I try to show that in the day to day life there are so many things to see.

Which is more important to you, the subject of your painting, or the way it is executed?
Patience has become imperative and brush strokes have become very important(a light hand) I guess that both the subject and the the way I show it are both equally important to me.

Do you prefer a perfect smooth technique or a more energetic expressive technique and why?
I hope to convey the way I see and feel about a subject and obviously I have my favorite things I like to do and paint. Most of all I like the comments that I get from a lot of people that they can feel the picture and that it talks to them.
I do not want to change the world, I do my art work because I love it. I think too many artists have lost that. It is conveyed in there work.
